"The Birdman" is
"The Birdman" project focused on the sequential process of attempting to revive a light aircraft abandoned after an accident years ago. Beyond mere direction, this project aimed to metaphorically convey the anxious inner thoughts of modern-day young adults, comparing them to the crash of the light aircraft.
In search of a location where nature and man-made elements coexist, we discovered the Oseom Airfield in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. Oseom is a small village whose name means "Island with Fish," inhabited by only a few people. Though once used as a light aircraft airfield, it is no longer operational, with aircraft abandoned on the grounds. Among the various types of planes left to decay, one in particular, abandoned in the field, caught our attention. Exposed to the elements for a long time, it had lost its original form, and this state significantly contributed to the direction of the project.
The scene where a rope is used to pull the aircraft may seem like a desperate attempt to save it in the photograph, but beneath the surface, it reflects the inner anxiety of today’s young adults. The styling was kept simple to express the feeling of having nothing to gain or lose, as if mirroring the mindset of these individuals. Through casual and effortless styling, we sought to reveal the protagonist’s anxious inner state.
Through this project, we aimed to draw a connection between the desire to save and revive this broken and abandoned aircraft with the current situation of our times. The aircraft represents not just a physical object but a symbol of our inner dreams and hopes. Through the process of attempting to save and fly it again, we wanted to focus on the intense determination to stand back up and keep trying, even when things seem difficult. This project conveys the importance of not giving up, even when faced with hardship, and of maintaining hope to the very end. The Bird Man Project seeks to deliver this message of courage and hope to many.
